Traveling by car with your dog: preparing for a calm and safe journey
Whether for a holiday, a trip to the vet, or just a simple drive, traveling by car with your dog requires a bit of preparation — for their comfort as well as everyone’s safety.
Safety first
In France, an unrestrained dog is considered a dangerous loose object. They must be kept secure: in a travel crate, behind a trunk divider, or with a harness attached to a seat belt. This protects them in the event of sudden braking and prevents you from being distracted while driving.
Preventing travel sickness
- Do not travel on a full stomach: provide a light meal 3 hours before.
- Acclimatize them gradually, starting with short trips.
- Ventilate the car and maintain a comfortable temperature.
Plan for breaks and water
On long trips, take a break every 2 hours so they can stretch their legs and drink. Bring water and a travel bowl.
The golden rule: never alone in the car
Even for a few minutes, even in the shade, the car interior becomes an oven in summer: never leave your dog alone in the car. To help them stay cool upon arrival, consider placing a cooling mat on their bed.
