Lick mats: why they have become essential for anxious dogs

Lick mats: why they have become essential for anxious dogs

The lick mat is one of the accessories most recommended by canine behaviorists. And for good reason: it acts simultaneously on anxiety, digestion, and mental stimulation.

Licking, a naturally soothing behavior

When a dog licks, its brain releases endorphins and serotonin. It is a self-soothing behavior that dogs use naturally when under stress. The lick mat channels this behavior in a constructive way.

Slowing down meals: a concrete benefit

Dogs that eat too fast swallow air, which causes bloating and increases the risk of gastric torsion—a veterinary emergency in large breeds. A lick mat extends meal time from 5 minutes to 15-20 minutes.

Mental stimulation without physical effort

Searching for food in the crevices of the mat activates the cognitive areas of the brain. 15 minutes on a lick mat is mentally equivalent to a 30-minute walk—ideal on rainy days, for older dogs, or those in recovery.

How to use it?

At mealtime: spread the kibble into the grooves. Your dog will have to seek out each piece of kibble individually.

As a treat: spread some unsalted peanut butter on it, place it in the freezer for 30 minutes—your dog will be occupied for 20 minutes.

Before a stressful situation: 10 minutes on the mat before the vet or a thunderstorm significantly reduces anticipatory anxiety.

Our Douce Patte lick mat is made of BPA-free food-grade silicone, is dishwasher safe, and attaches to the floor via suction so it does not slip during use.
