Getting a kitten used to going outside: at what age and how?

At what age can a kitten go outside?
Wait until your kitten is microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered, generally around 4 to 6 months old. Before then, its immune system is still fragile and the risk of running away is high.
Supervised outings: start gently
For the first few times, opt for supervised outings in a quiet space (garden, secured balcony). An anti-escape cat harness allows you to let it explore without the risk of it darting off: the vest-style cut prevents it from backing out and escaping.
Steps for a successful first outing
- First, get it used to the harness indoors for a few minutes a day.
- Go outside in an enclosed and quiet place, without other animals.
- Let it explore at its own pace, without carrying or pulling it.
- Bring it back inside before it shows signs of stress.
- Repeat every day, gradually increasing the duration.
