How to choose the right bed for your dog based on its size and age

Sleep accounts for 12 to 16 hours a day in a dog's life. Poor bedding can lead to joint pain, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. Here is how to choose.

By size

Small dog (under 10 kg): a donut bed with raised edges is ideal. It allows your dog to rest their head on the rim, a secure position that calms them. Choose a diameter of 50 to 60 cm.

Medium dog (10-25 kg): a rectangular bed with quality foam or memory foam. The dog should be able to stretch out completely. Allow for about 1.5× the length of your dog when lying down.

Large dog (over 25 kg): opt for an orthopedic memory foam bed. Large breeds are particularly prone to osteoarthritis and dysplasia. A bed that distributes weight prevents pressure points.

By age

Puppy: prioritize bedding with high sides that simulates the warmth of the litter. A soft fabric donut bed reduces separation anxiety.

Active adult dog: a designer sofa bed with a solid base and a washable cover. The important thing is that the foam returns to its shape quickly.

Senior dog (7 years and up): an orthopedic bed becomes essential. The memory foam contours to the joints and relieves pain. Choose easy access, low edges, and a washable cover.

And for anxious dogs?

Regardless of age, anxious dogs benefit from a donut bed with wrapping edges. The circular shape and raised rim reproduce the feeling of being snuggled, which naturally activates the secretion of oxytocin — the calming hormone.
